You can't. You can only upgrade your hammer 4 times. The 4th level is the max, but that isn't enough to break that hammer...but! In one of the mines, you have to go into the deep levels to find this stone that's called the mythical/mystic stone. (I don't remember the name....it's not the blue ore to upgrade the last level of your hammer) It looks like the branches, only it's black. Use that and go to Saibara so that he can upgrade it. It will take about a week or more and it will cost quite alot. When you finish upgrading that, the hammer will look GREEN. You will then be able to break that rock. I advise that you don't try to break that rock, because the path only leads you to the edge of the river/lake...nothing there.

P.S. But there is an advantage to ugrading this: On your field, if you have upgraded your hammer with that ore, you will be able to destroy all the fencing on your farm. (This applies to all the other tools)

I dont know if this is right but in the ds version you have to travel to the bottom of the second mine and get the sword from a girl then press A in front of the boulder and it will break.
