Under this system, the player selects an action from the menus, such as Attack, Magic, and Item. Unlike previous games in the series, the player only controls the lead character while the remaining two characters are controlled by the game's artificial intelligence (AI). Each action requires a specific number of slots on the ATB bar, which continually refills to a set maximum number of slots. The ATB bar gradually increases in size throughout the game from two slots to six.[8] The player may select less than the maximum number of possible actions or may stop the filling of the ATB bar and perform as many actions as can be done with the current ATB amount. The player may select an autobattle command, which fills the ATB slots with actions chosen automatically. Actions cannot be performed outside of battle, and the characters' health is fully restored after each battle.

I got things a bit wrong on the battle system, but I know some used the ABS. This is what wikipedia had to say about combat. (first paragraph of battle system section.)

Final Fantasy 13's battle system is wonderful in my opinion. 13-2... Well I love it even more. It has 'live' battle sequences much like Kingdom hearts, and I feel if square enix continue with final fantasys much like 13-2 I'll be VERY happy. 13's battle system contains ways in which you can manipulate the characters into being what you want to be rather than having one character focus on one spefic role. It's by far my favourite Final Fantasy.

I'm currently downloading 5, 8 and 9 right now. Hopefully I'll be able to play them and post some reviews in this forum at a later date

Just to be clear, you mean that a certain character isn't really stuck being a magic user and can be a physical attacker if you want them to be?

I think yes, since this game is rather changing compared to its predecessor.
My Type-0 is pretty cool, you can control 14 people, and max 3 people can be played at once. One people can only use one type of weapons, but all of them is useful and can be powerful if you combine them great.

I see.....
It's almost like Final Fantasy XII. You could make everyone strong physical attackers, or you could turn someone into a different type of mage. You could even turn someone into a summoner if you gave them all of the Espers.

Well yes

You'll find to start with they all have a role but will gain other roles and you can swap between them

Ah, so it's a bit more like Final Fantasy X. As they level up, they can move to other parts of the sphere grid (the level up system used in FFX) to gain different abilities and stat upgrades. (Attackers can move to a mage's path and gain their abilities/stats and vice versa.)

I was actually just about to say it's like the sphere grid in 10 XD

I think personally it's set out in a better way in 13 and 13-2, Though 10 was still amazing

I just played Final Fantasy 13 on Saturday. I like the idea of paradigms, since I don't recall being able to change your fighting style in any other games like that.
