Arc, the problem with IE (any version) is the scripts..... 90% of malicious viruses, malware, adware, greyware and popups, are generated by scripts on web sites. 100% of all pop ups are created by a script on a web site. it's the scripts that make Internet Explorer as secure as swiss cheese is air tight...lol
firefox with the noscript add on, will allow you to turn on those scripts, on sites that you actually DO want a pop up on (dell outlet is an example....you need the pop up there), and will block 100% of all others.
Opera has very similar options built in, but not as tight as Firefox
BUT.....for those that are unable to download a new browser (such as parents who won't allow you, because they don't understand that it's more beneficial than using what comes "out of the box" with windows), cranking up the security settings as high as you can is a good choice.....by far not the best choice....but better than just letting it all come through.
and i would NOT recommend IE without some firewall....and i don't mean the one that is built into Windows
